Based on traditional flutes from all over the world. Our flutes are made exclusively out of bamboo, a renewable resource that has been utilized by humans from the ancient of days. Bamboo has twenty times the tensile strength of steel, and yet also bends with the wind, perfect for scaffolding. In China, it is made into 50 story or more scaffolding for buildings under construction. It is also one of the fastest growing plants of the planet, up to a foot a day in some types.
"Vitality and Versatility are the essence of bamboo." from the introduction to Bamboo by Robert Austin. Our flutes are made in small batches insuring that each instrument is a unique work of art. The bamboo grows the dimensions, we work in "the art of subtraction". The tone, character, and volume are found according to length and interior diameter of the pole. The scales and their versatility are found in the size and placement of the holes along the pole. The holes are made by the elements of fire and metal, with a red hot steel rod. The batik designs on some flutes are created by the subtle touch of an acetoline torch. The inlaid stones and individual designs are made the same as the holes with less pressure or with a wood burning tool. The ends are finished on a sander, smooth as a beach rock or river stone, and wrapped with a waxed nylon string to insure longevity. The wrappings are to insure that the flute is around for the enjoyment of as many as seven generations to come, as some of the ancient Japanese shakuhatchi flutes are still being passed down through the ages. Chinese and Japanese Meditation Flutes | $100
These ancient scales have a beauty and depth that have struck to the heart of the human soul for milleniam. The Chinese style has 4 holes, where the Japanese has 5. Both play a penatonic scale, thus you can't play any "wrong" notes. They are available in a wide range of scales, as well as, in a side blown (horizontal) or end blown (vertical) mouth piece.
